ParrotOS 7 Beta Released: A Major Leap for Security-Focused Linux

The Parrot Security Team has officially announced the beta release of ParrotOS 7, marking a significant milestone for one of the most popular security-focused Linux distributions. This update introduces a modern desktop experience, a refreshed base system, and deep infrastructure changes aimed at improving stability, usability, and long-term maintainability.

Debian 13 “Trixie” as the New Foundation

ParrotOS 7 now runs entirely on Debian 13 “Trixie”, aligning with the latest generation of Debian packages and core technologies. This transition reduces technical debt and future-proofs the platform for upcoming features and hardware.

One notable improvement is the automatic mounting of /tmp as tmpfs in RAM, rather than on disk. This change enhances performance, minimizes SSD wear, and restores the intended behavior of /tmp as a temporary space cleared at every reboot.

Additionally, APT now offers a color-coded, more readable interface, with aligned columns and clearer messages for missing dependencies and removed packages—making package management more transparent and user-friendly.

KDE Plasma Becomes the Default Desktop

In a strategic shift, KDE Plasma is now the official desktop environment for ParrotOS 7. Historically, Parrot shipped with MATE as its primary desktop, but KDE was chosen for its rapid evolution and modern technology stack.

Key KDE advantages include:

  • Wayland support
  • Qt6 integration
  • HiDPI/4K monitor handling
  • Improved task switcher and KRunner
  • Revamped system settings

This move ensures a polished, consistent user experience aligned with Parrot’s long-term vision. While MATE remains supported, KDE Plasma delivers both aesthetic improvements and enhanced usability.

Users on ParrotOS 6 “Lorykeet” will receive an official upgrade guide once the final release of ParrotOS 7 is available.

Visual Overhaul & Core Component Updates

ParrotOS 7 doubles down on its iconic green-on-black theme, extending the classic terminal aesthetic across the system while retaining its original branding.

Under the hood, major updates include:

  • parrot-core refactored for multi-desktop support
  • parrot-menu scripts rewritten from Nim to Go for better performance
  • Enhanced ISO and VM image build infrastructure
  • New automation for weekly image builds, ensuring frequent, up-to-date snapshots during the beta phase

These changes make ParrotOS 7 more maintainable, visually appealing, and future-ready.

Why This Matters

For cybersecurity professionals, ethical hackers, and privacy enthusiasts, ParrotOS 7 beta represents a modern, stable, and performance-optimized platform. With Debian 13, KDE Plasma, and infrastructure improvements, ParrotOS continues to lead as a top choice for security-focused Linux users.
