Apple is preparing to redefine the “earbud” with a new version of AirPods that features built-in cameras. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the project—which has been in secret development for nearly four years—is now in the Design Validation Testing (DVT) phase. This is the final major milestone before mass production begins.
Unlike a traditional camera meant for selfies or social media, these sensors are designed to act as “eyes” for a revamped, generative AI version of Siri. This marks Apple’s most significant move yet to compete with AI-heavy rivals like Meta and OpenAI in the emerging wearable hardware market.
How “Visual Intelligence” Works
The cameras in these AirPods aren’t meant for photography. Instead, they capture low-resolution visual data to feed into Apple’s AI models, allowing Siri to “see” what you see.
- Contextual Assistance: Imagine looking at the ingredients in your pantry and asking, “Siri, what can I cook with this?” The AI analyzes the visual feed and dictates a recipe.
- Advanced Navigation: The earbuds can provide real-time, turn-by-turn directions by identifying landmarks and street signs in your direct line of sight.
- Smart Reminders: Siri could offer reminders based on your surroundings, such as alerting you to pick up a specific item when you walk past it in a grocery store.
Design: Familiar Look, New Hardware
While the internal technology is revolutionary, the external design remains grounded in Apple’s current aesthetic.
- Pro 3 Foundation: The prototypes closely resemble the AirPods Pro 3.
- Longer Stems: To accommodate the camera modules and extra processing hardware, the stems are reportedly slightly longer than the current Pro models.
- Privacy LED: To address the obvious privacy concerns of a “hidden” camera, Apple has added a small LED light on the exterior. This light will glow whenever the cameras are actively processing visual data, alerting those around you that the sensors are on.
The Road to September
Apple originally targeted a launch for the first half of 2026, but the project was delayed to align with software milestones. The “Visual Intelligence” features require a massive upgrade to Siri’s underlying architecture—now reportedly being bolstered by Google’s Gemini technology.
Current Production Roadmap:
- DVT (Design Validation Testing): Currently underway. Testing near-final hardware.
- PVT (Production Validation Testing): The next step. Testing the actual assembly line and mass-production quality.
- Mass Production: Expected to begin shortly after PVT if testing is successful.
The revamped Siri is slated for a September 2026 release alongside iOS 27. If the hardware team is satisfied with the AI’s performance, the camera-equipped AirPods could debut during the same window.
Competition: The AI Wearable War
Apple’s entry into camera-based wearables puts it in direct competition with two major trends:
- Meta’s Smart Glasses: Which have already gained traction by integrating AI with first-person perspective.
- OpenAI’s Jony Ive Project: A rumored “screenless” AI device meant to replace the smartphone.
By leveraging the existing popularity of AirPods—a product millions of people already wear for hours a day—Apple has a massive head start in making AI-enhanced hardware a mainstream reality.
